TORONTO, ON, August 20, 2024 – The Game Of Kings returns to Game+, as the Network presents Chess.com’s highly-anticipated Speed Chess Championship Live Final—broadcast live from Paris, France on Sunday, September 8, at 12 p.m. ET. This marks the first time ever that a chess event will air live on Game+, which began its successful partnership with Chess.com in 2023.
Broadcast live from the stunning new ESpot esports arena in the heart of Paris, the Speed Chess Championship Final is the culmination of Chess.com’s flagship Speed Chess Championship event—a grueling gauntlet that pits 16 of Chess.com’s most elite players against each other, with a total prize pool of $175,000 on the line. From the initial 16-man roster, only four players will make it to the Main Event portion in Paris. The 2024 tournament is a historic one for Chess.com, as the platform prepares to present the final round of the Speed Chess Championship offline and in-person for the very first time.
Game+ coverage will put the spotlight on four hours of exclusive tournament action, where the two winners of the Semifinal round compete for the most prestigious title in speed chess—taking part in an intense series of 30-minute one-on-one matches, with the winner taking home a $17,500 grand prize. Will tournament titans Hikaru Nakamura, winner of a record six Speed Chess Championships, and defending 2023 winner Magnus Carlsen add to their growing list of accolades? Or will a new champion be crowned?
“Since launching our partnership with Chess.com in 2023, chess programming has been a consistent favorite with the Game+ audience and a mainstay among our Top 10 most popular shows,” said Chad Midgley, VP of Content for Anthem. “Now, we’re proudly taking things to an exciting new level, as we evolve from taped chess to live chess for the first time ever. This truly is a landmark moment for chess coverage on Game+, and we look forward to sharing all of the intensity and action with our viewers this September.”
